Year 8 Science

Getting Energised!

During term 1, Year 8 Science students have been investigating energy. What is it? What is it good for? How does it move? How does it change? So many questions and plenty of activities to help us find out the answers!

With the emphasis now in VCE on student-led investigations, we are making sure our young students are well prepared for their future studies. Junior science students are learning about fair testing, variables (all three types), how to tabulate and graph their findings and how to analyse their data and draw conclusions. And at the same time, they are having some fun doing it.

Point Nepean National Park

On Thursday 2nd March, all Year 8 students visited the Point Nepean National Park, at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula, and the gateway to Port Phillip Bay. The purpose of the excursion was to further explore Australia’s WW2 History, as we have been reading a novel by Theodore Taylor called ‘The Cay’, which is set in the islands of the Caribbean during WW2. The students recently completed researching and writing individual formal reports on topics relating to the novel, including various aspects of WW2 History.

The students and teachers hiked the 10km round trip and had a wonderful time exploring Fort Nepean, with its underground passages and fortifications. They had time to pop in to the old Quarantine Station, and students took the opportunity to discuss details of their up-coming creative writing folio piece while walking with their teachers, Ms Kocevska, Ms Torcello and Mr Webb.

Point Nepean National Park offers free entry, and is a great day out for the whole family.

Viking Incursion

On Tuesday 14th of March we had a Viking Incursion. It was very interesting. We played two different types of Viking games including Kubb and tiggy. They both we very fun.

Once we came inside we met a guy named Robert who sang different songs in Latin and ancient languages. He also played lots of ancient musical instruments very well.

We learned many things including war tactics and sword fighting techniques. We also saw some of our classmates dress up in old fashioned clothing, such as clothing styles of the royalty, peasants and members of the church.

It was very interactive and we got to touch the fur of different animals and parts of the armour. Some people also used rubber swords and did sword fighting which was very cool.

We saw swords, long swords, spears as well as armour, chains and ancient harps, flutes and trumpets.

Something else I’d want to learn about Vikings and their lifestyle would be more about hardships they faced and their religion.
